The city of Duncan, British Columbia is situated on Vancouver Island. The city got its name from William Chalmers Duncan, who was a settler who arrived in Victoria in the 1800's. Duncan was on the search for gold rushes, before he eventually settled close to the current Duncan City. Kenneth, his son, became Duncan's very first mayor in 1876. The early 1900's saw Duncan's Chinatown become the social hub for the Cowichan Valley's Chinese people, and Chinatown became a focal point within the southwestern corner of Duncan City. Nonetheless, immigration laws became more restrictive, and companies closed as stricter laws were created to replace the existing ones.
